The Day the Music Died

It’s tough to be in music these days. Death Row Records filed for bankruptcy, music stores now compete with the impenetrable iTunes, Ticket Master is merging with LiveNation, and most artists make little money off their music (although record labels are more vocal about profit losses).  To add to the troubles, the Honolulu Symphony announced that it will file bankruptcy and cancel the remainder of its 2009 season. 

Symphonies around the country have been struggling with increased operating costs in the face of reduced contributions and season ticket subscriptions. For many, music performances are part of discretionary income, and  there isn’t much of that these days. Arts is also one of the first budget cuts a government makes in tough times. Those two realities can be the death toll for small and large performance companies alike. 

While art may seem frivolous, funding and patronage is important to cultural heritage and knowledge. The Dark Ages put a damper on music, art, and literature, among other things. Let’s hope that this recession does not create a new dark age for artistic endeavors.
